"You are so much more capable than you think you are." - a message written in my middle school year book by my best friend at the time. This is such an earnest piece of encouragement that I truly needed to hear, and still think abt sometimes when I feel incompetent.
"If you can't do it, then don't." - a friend when I was stressed tf out abt schoolwork. It sounds simple, but really stuck with me. It's basically saying if something is really stressing you out and weighing down on you, it's ok to take a break from it, or even not do it at all. I guess I really like how it gives you permission to be unproductive and rest.
"If it's stressing you out, that means it's working." - I was trying to create a high school club and it was j sooo complicated and I had no idea what I was doing, but a friend told me this on the bus ride home. It's reassuring, it's like "the things most worth doing are hard." (lmaoo j realized it's like the opposite of the last quote)
This one's acc insane. It's an anecdote I heard from a friend, but basically this girl was talking about how when she was younger, she didn't know how to tie her shoes. So she asked the teacher to tie them for her, and in doing so some kids were laughing at her bc she didn't know how to tie her own shoes. But she was like "they can laugh all they want, at the end of the day, my shoes are getting tied." And that's just such a great metaphor for how you kind of just have to tune out the haters in your life.
I was talking to my friend about shitty movies and how "some things should not exist."
And they responded, "but they do."
And this hit me like a truck. Like that's so deep.. I don't think they intended it to be deep, but I kind of saw it as a metaphor for myself, as unfortunately, sometimes I do not think I should exist. But I do. Lowkey ties into that one CSM quote about crappy movies haha... There is something charming about them... maybe I'm projecting.
I was talking to my friend about how I wished my parents were more supportive of my artistic pursuits, and they were like, "you mean you want them to support you now, and not when you're rich and famous." I know when they used "you" in this context it wasn't necessarily talking about ME, but just hearing "when you're rich and famous" made me feel really uplifted. Almost like they were casually like yeah, when you inevitably get rich and famous. I'm keeping this interpretation for myself muahaha.
I was realllly struggling at this retail job, I was assigned to organize something and I just had no idea how to do it or even start. A co-worker comes up to me, effortlessly explains how to do it, and says, "Everything is going to be okay." This surprised me... like wow that's... exactly what I needed to hear in that moment. Short, but sweet.
I was reallyyyy going thru it at college omfg - never been more lost in my life. I confess to a friend, "I don't know what I'm doing!"
They respond, "Sometimes it's okay to not know what you're doing."
Similar to some of the other ones, but I just love reassurance like that. Like yeah... you don't have to have it all figured out.
Might add on to this if I think of/come across any more

And... it worked.
I think of this as a metaphor for trying to force yourself into something that you are not. I got this from a book but this reminds me of another metaphor "snowmobile in a desert." Basically, the snowmobile will never reach its full potential bc it is built for the tundra, not the desert.
