sally face was, and still is, one of the greatest indie horror games of all time. personally, it is one of my favourite games ever created (steve gabry really pulled through!).
with the game taking centre stage from 2016 onwards, numerous gamers both online and offline have found themselves completely immersed in its easy to play mechanics and how relatable each character is (not to mention the absolute gut wrenching scenes). i found the game to be incredibly relatable and influential, as it brings an aspect to modern day life with issues surrounding mental health and identity.
sal fisher, the main protagonist of the game, is completely, "out of the closet" with his identity, with picture frames from his dads wedding showing him in a dress. i find this to be really heartwarming, especially with cis and transgender folk who may struggle with their sexuality or their femininity/masculinity. this particular picture demonstrates that it is okay to be who you are and present yourself as whoever you may be, whether down the line or just discovering yourself now. i, myself, struggle with identity quite a bit, so this really did show me to be okay with who i am. this may not be as interesting, however with larry presenting himself to have long hair also showed me (and potentially you!) that no matter your hair length, type, or how its styled, you are *you* - especially with a lot of people stating that, "men shouldnt have long hair". however, it also adds to the alternative aspect.
speaking of being alternative, the game also introduces us to death metal and other genres alike, with the main band being sanitys fall created by steve gabry (fun fact: he composed it all and the band is on spotify and other streaming platforms!). it creates a sense of belonging, especially to people who may be bullied for liking alternative things and music, or who may feel like they dont quite fit in to society. its strangely comforting despite the heavier tunes.
mental health is a huge aspect. i, myself, deal quite tremendously with mental health, so with the game touching on dark themes surrounding the subject, it again creates a sense of belonging for those who are struggling. its really lovely seeing the community come together to help each other out.
question of the blog: what are your favourite aspects of the game? can be themes, characters, favourite episodes, memories, etc!
thank you for reading!
ps: should any of you deal with struggles of mental health in any form, my dms are always open. i am not a licensed therapist, but should you need proper help, please reach out to helplines or your local doctor. you are not alone🫶
