In other words, I have been trying to get my shit together.
Recently, I have lost any commitments I once had. It is relaxing, but a very slippery slope into mental, emotional, and physical atrophy. Routine is something I need to keep my life together. Without it, I lie in bed all day.
Independence is both one of my core values and one of my most underpracticed skills. An umbrella of skills, really. An umbrella of highly abandoned, but longed for skills. Without going into too much detail, I really suck at housekeeping and generally just being a well-rounded person. The tradwife life is not for me.
However, I want this to change! I need it to change! There is a lot I want to do with my life. I want to travel and maybe even live abroad for a while. I want to have a big book of recipes and a pretty garden. I want to find ways to make my chores enjoyable, and when they aren't, I want to have the self-discipline to still do them. These aren't just things I need. They're things I want.
So, where to start? At the beginning, I suppose. Learning how to do basic shit is the foundation for everything else. I can't travel abroad if the idea of planning an outing makes me grimace. I can't have a flower garden if I hate cleaning.
Goals aren't something I took very seriously. Constantly hearing, "Goals are dreams with plans," and filling out SMART goal sheets made me hate them. I ignored what I now know are very important lessons. When trying to figure out how to get my life together, I wonder how easier things would have been had I listened to teachers' advice from the start. Maybe I would not be dealing with these problems.
Unfortunately, I can't change the past. I can only change the future. Fun fact: I hated hearing that motto too.
Nevertheless, habits are the key to health, and routine is the key to keeping habits. Yes, there is a balance. I don't want monotony. Still, as I said, I don't function without a strong routine. Here are some goals I have, made vague for privacy:
- Go out to travel at least once a week. Must be far enough to require public transport/a drive.
- Plan the next week's meals every Friday. Go shopping on Saturday.
- Make a new recipe every week.
- Make my bed every morning and open my window as soon as I wake up.
- Draw something small each day. Invest in a new sketchbook if I have to for this purpose.
- Separate from the previous goal, make a proper, digital drawing each week. Finish it within a fortnight.
And here are some rules:
- Keep reminders on my phone for my daily chores. Do this for at least three weeks or longer until I don't need them anymore.
- Use my self-care app each day to motivate me. Seeing the progress in a measurable way is a great way to feel like I am accomplishing something.
- Never wear pyjamas during the day unless I am very sick. Staying in pyjamas means I never properly wake up, which means I never get anything done that day.
I am very tired, so I will cap this here. This blog entry doesn't really have a central point. Honestly, I just like blogging. Hopefully, this was an interesting read. Hell, maybe it will help you with your own goals! That would be nice.
'Til next time,
Dolly
