Playing Beta Minecraft for the first time ever after only ever playing whatever recent version there was for so long, kinda gives you whiplash. The very first thing you notice when you load up the world is that there is no sprint. and there's no way to enable it, because it hadn't been added to the game yet. But the good thing about it is that it forces you to slow down. You have no choice but to just walk everywhere. In a modern world of elytras and rockets, beta Minecraft makes you take things slow. The fastest form of transportation is a minecart, maybe a boat (but those are actually a lot slower in beta) And who even uses minecarts anymore?? Its been so forgotten ever since so many things have been added that outshine it. Its a forgotten art. But not in beta.
In modern, when your looking at a long-term world, you have to focus on building all the farms. An iron farm, an xp farm, multiple xp farms probably, tree farms, cow farms, sheep farms, EVERY farm you can think of. The whole industrial revolution has to happen to make things easier. to make things quicker. to take the load off of gathering those materials yourself, cuz who wants to actually cut down trees by hand when the industrial sized Tree Chopper 9000 will do it for you. But wasn't that always the point? To do it yourself? In beta, there's no need for any of that. There's no xp so there's no need to grind for it. You can probably make a mob farm out of a dungeon, but for what? There's no husbandry so you cant capture and breed animals, the redstone is very limited, there's only so much you can do with a piston. You have to do everything yourself and everything is just that much more valuable.
Building is definitely something to get used to but once you get the hang of it you'll find the limits are actually quite charming. Which brings me to my next point, the block options. With such a limited variety of blocks compared to modern Minecraft, it genuinely helps you be more creative and helps you learn to work with what you have. There's no need to stress about what blocks your gonna use because you've only got a handful to work with. Unlike with modern, first thing you probably think about before building is what blocks you're gonna use, the palette, or where you're gonna get those blocks. Stressing before you even start. Beta really challenges you to think outside the box. If you want your builds to be different, you really have to develop a style. And that alone changes the way you'll build forever. Going back to modern after to playing beta for a while gives you a fond new appreciation for everything, helps you see things in a different light.
When everything now consists of speed-running and fast paced gameplay, there's always a set goal. Ever since the end was added, a set path was implemented into the game forever. certain things are now unachievable unless you follow that path. And now, you could always just not follow it, no one is forcing you. But it leaves a part of the game untouched. A part that has become so crucial in every world, its part of the progression whether you acknowledge it or not. But in Beta, there is no goal. There's no end, nothing to look for, nothing to discover. No villages, no mineshafts, no ruins, no temples, nothing. Now to most, that may seem bleak. meaningless. Why play? Because it means the world is your oyster. Its whatever you want it to be, what YOU make of it. And that, i think is beautiful. This large blank canvas that encapsulates everything Minecraft ever stood for.
Beta Minecraft lets you move at your own pace but makes you slow down at the same time. It reminds you that there's no rush. Its slow, not overwhelming, its classic and nostalgic. Its perfect. That's why its considered the golden age. Its not just nostalgia, beta Minecraft IS perfect. I rest my case. PLAY BETA
