This is actually stuff from my old blog that I'm rewording and moving to over here because I want to keep them foreva. This is going to be multiple different posts, so this little beginning bit in all of these posts.
Ghosts (specifically the original Ghosts BBC) is like one of my favorite show on earth. I've watched it... well I don't know how many times! I'm not saying that to be dramatic, I've genuinely watched it so many times that I've lost track. I've been watching since I believe season two? I remember season three coming out (my favorite season), and then I remember... the worst thing to ever happen. Ghosts being taken off of HBO before the fourth season came out. Heartbreaking I tell you! I did cry over this!!
There are two main versions of Ghosts that people talk about. I believe there are six versions? British (the original), American, Australian, French, German, Greek!! They all follow this base formula of young couple acquire ooolllddd house, the lady kinda dies but comes back, then she deals with the ghosts while her husband is a little stupid but supports her. All of them follow this. Mostly. I think. I've only seen the British and American versions, heard about the French, German and Greek versions, and seen many a trailer for the Australian version. That one apparently started coming out November of last year. Why didn't anyone tell me....
I'll be talking in depth about my favorite version... The British version! In my old blog I had a word limit, but I'm just gonna GO until I'm ready to stop with this one. I'll start with the cast!!! Though, sadly, I cannot include a photo of the actors in this post like I did on my past blog. That's okay though!! I already have everyone organized in order of death. Yeah son. I do.
I'll start with Robin (Rogh) No Last Name, the Neanderthal. He's a wise and wonderful character that can be annoying at times but I still love him. He's (obviously) the oldest ghost and there's not really a reason why he hasn't moved on. Personally, I think he's supposed to be a guiding light for other ghosts as he was struck by lightening.
There's a group of people that died from the Black Plague that live in a pit under the house. They show up sometimes and are mostly played by the people that play the other ghosts of the house, but they're not main characters as much as the others. Honorable mention I guess?
Next is Humphrey Bone, from the Tudor era, who is played by the same guy that plays Robin! Well, the head is played by the same guy. The body is played by a different, shorter dude. Humphrey was beheaded by accident! Accident that was lowkey his own fault. I'd say he's my fourth favorite ghost. He's not on screen as much as everyone else because his actor is too busy playing Robin, but the times that he graces our screens is usually pretty good.
Then we have Mary Guppy!! Mary, sweet sweet Mary, was set on fire because of accusations of witchcraft during the Stuart era. We don't hear her talk about it, but we do see a scene right after she talks about it. I'm guessing she went into detail of feeling her skin burning off or something because all of the ghosts are HORRIFIED by her story in season four. She can't count, can't read, and talks a little funny. I love her so much.
After Mary came Kitty (Katherine) Higham. My second favorite. Oh. My. God. I love Kitty so much. She's a Georgian woman who I thought was supposed to be a teenager. Her actress said in an interview during the first season that she was a teenager, but that WAS before they decided when she died. And how she died. Pretty sure she was going to be poisoned by her sister, but the writers decided to change it because it felt a little cheap to have her die like that. I like the way they had her die instead. Oh she's so little.
Thomas Thorne. He died after Kitty in the Regency era. He was a poet that got shot in the abdomen and he's so whiny about it. I do not like Thomas. I actually like him less and less upon every rewatch. He is super funny though. He's one of the most dramatic characters (Of course he is. He's a poet.), which honestly makes it even funnier because his actor is super duper giggly in the behind the scenes. It seems hard for him to get through a scene and I love that. Also, part of my Thomas dislike comes from me also being a poet.
Fanny (Stephanie) Button was the next to die. She's old. She's cranky. She's really mean. She's super smart. She got pushed out of a window during the Edwardian era by her gay, cheating husband. She's a little homophobic. She eventually stops being homophobic, but I think a little bit stays. She had her dog taxidermied when he died. She freaking loves her house. She can be seen in photographs. What's there not to love?
A little over 30 years later, The Captain (Commanding Officer [redacted] No Last Name) died like right after WW2 ended. He is. My favorite. I love him so much. In my old blog, I planned to dive deep into the intricacies of his character, but I never got around to it. After the movie comes out, do not fret. I WILL be talking about him. Anyway. The Captain is a queer man that goes through some of the most change throughout the series. His name and cause of death are revealed in the second to last episode not counting the Christmas episode.
Following The Captain, Pat (Patrick) Butcher died a scouts leader in the 1980s. It is unclear if he died because he was shot through the neck with an arrow or if it was the bus crash right after. A little boy killed him. A ginger little boy. My own kind... Pat is my third favorite by the way. I love the greatest DJ in the area.
Lastly but certainly not least, Julian Fawcett MP died in 1993 while having sex with his secretary. He doesn't have pants and can touch stuff. He's also a loser but really funny. Yes I hate him slightly less than Thomas. Sue me! Apparently he can also possess people. That's something we see in the trailer for the movie. Don't know what that's about.
I lied when I said lastly. There are living people that live in the house.
Allison Cooper is the person who inherited the house. She's also the one that can see the ghosts! She can see them because... Well, in the first episode Julian pushes her out of a window. She lives! But he did attempt murder. Makes sense though. He IS a politician. She hates all of the ghosts a little bit and she hates her power to see the dead, but I would too girl it's okay. I respect her so much. No idea how she didn't go crazy being the caretaker for a house full of dead people. She's a wonderful main character and her actress is really funny. Very good at playing comically fed up and mischievous.
Allison's husband is Mike Cooper. He's such a great character. He's a supportive husband, he's kinda dumb, he sings like everything he does, and he acknowledges the ghosts as if they were real people!! He can't see the ghosts and that makes him kinda sad, but he does have interactions with them! Mostly Julian I think. He also has this quirk where he looks upwards to talk to the ghosts. That's actually a strategy that the actor came up with to avoid looking the ghosts in the face!!
Fun fact about all of the ghosts (Minus Kitty and Mary. Sorry, girls!). They're all the creators of the show!! And they made a movie called Bill! And they made a show called Yonderland!! And they were the main people in Horrible Histories!! AAAnd they're an acting troop called ThemThere!! No one really calls them ThemThere though. Most fans (affectionately) call them Six Idiots because there are six of them and they very frequently call eachother and themselves idiots. On Laurence Rickard(Robin and Humphrey)'s website it actually opens to his name then "Writer. Actor. Idiot." In all of these things, all six play MANY different characters. It's absurd, but I guess it does take the cost of actors down?
Back to the series, my favorite episodes for each season have to be “Carpe Diem” in season 5, “Speak as ye Choose” in season 4, “The Woodworm Men” in season 3 (followed close by “Something to Share?”), “Redding Weddy” in season 2 (Followed close by “Perfect Day”), and “Getting Out” in season 1. I like all the episodes but those are just my absolute favorites!!
