Reposting this from my tumblr since i initially wanted to post it here so I'll just add a little bit more content here and few fixes here and there (english isnt my first language but also i just struggle with writing in general : P) i'll probably come back to edit this or make a full on proper post about this that isnt just me writing whatever comes to mind.
I've actually been wanting to talk about the Odyssey movie ever since i saw it because its very popular-i feel like mostly because of the cast and the people behind it but also because its literally based off (am saying 'based off' because honestly the story does not feel like the Odyssey at all but rather a different story just with the material and borrowed the structure slightly from it BUT THATS ME PLEASE DONT KILL ME FOR THIS TAKE) but also a mythology that is very well-known (even in the whole physical evidence of the trojan war might actually be a thing but i'll research more into that because ive been confused if the whole illiad and odyssey is history but in a cultural lense or just a cultural story ever since ive been listening to people's takes).
Seeing it made me feel like its very different to what the odyssey actually is and what Nolan's trying to show and tell us kind of.. doesnt make sense with the evidence provided about humanity falling is soley ody's fault hence his guilt and all that (i've also learnt that that concept is western rather than the whole cycle that the greeks believed the world goes through(along with the concept of different Ages and the difference types of authority that circles around in time) specifically from the Overly Sarcastic Productions - absolutely love their channel! and has led me to dig deeper to see the philosophies written in olden stories and how it differs time to time.)
first of all - i did not go in expecting this to be a perfect or even a good adaptation of the actual Odyssey and i do think it is a good movie if it wasnt the Odyssey (if that makes sense) because by comparing it and apparently is supposed to be a really good adaptation - it REALLY isnt.
Huge characters with important plotpoints are and/or feel either sidelined, barely a character or straight up dont exist and its not the BIGGEST deal but still annoying when they are supposed to be really important to the story.
I dont mind that the gods arent there aside from few scenes with Athena. i did like how she appeared to take the apperance of his guilt tho it kinda doesnt make sense for her character but i feel like she's more of a thought person rather than being a full on greek god.
also very pissed about how people reacted to Helen being played by a black actress and callin it 'jarring' and 'inaccurate' (almost always the same people who says that the movie doesnt need to be historically accurate to the culture that the MYTH IS LITERALLY DERIVED FROM AND IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THE STORYYY!!!) if you're okay with a bunch of white actors playing roles that aren't white but freak out when an actor of color does it - you're just racist.
and thats a problem of its own where people just dont fucking care about giving importance or at the very least acknowledgment of what culture, place or people that a thing is from and often be like "welll thats YOUR cool thing that am gonna make my own and when you ask about giving respect, i can just say that its totally mine" (things like AAVE, cultural clothing/fashion, music, etc)
yes i use too many barriers, SUE ME!!! ( ` ᴖ ´ )
