Ive been really into a lot smaller, and lesser known artists now. Ever since i've been following machi7k on instagram i've been implored to listen to music that has expanded into areas you would think. For example i'm really into jazz music, and i've been exploring the jazz and funk scene in Tunisia and other parts of north Africa.
However its been really difficult trying to find new artists on my own. I've always had this idea that physical media was sort of outdated, and that digital was the objectively superior form of media, i still think that to a degree, but seeing how much companies dip into your privacy and data just to make an extra buck scares me. For example spotify's slop playlists and how they are just trying to maximize profits. You would assume the modern day algorithms can predict the perfect song you would want but i guess since billionaires need just a little extra money apparently not.
On the other hand theres not a lot of spaces for physical media exploration, and even in the few spots i've been to I just feel out of place. Also the barrier of entry for listening to vinyls is ridiculously expensive. Apparently any record player under say 300$ is slowly destroying your records and thats not even including the powered speakers you need because it only comes with a preamp. Its all just so much, especially cost-wise thats not even including maintenance like brushes, covers and storage. CD's are definitely much easier to get into, you just need a cheap cd player and a computer, but again paying 20,30,50 dollars for one album, when a subscription to a streaming service is like 13 bucks a month feels like a scam
It just feels like theres no good alternatives, i'm not old enough to drink yet so i feel weird going into jazz bars, festivals are very fun, but they don't happen too often and they're kind of overwhelming. Ive tried bandcamp, and soundcloud, and tidal or whatever but it just lacks stuff i take for granted on spotify and i feel like i cant switch.
Oh also buying a DAP or MP3 player is a total waste of time, they're expensive, bulky, getting and labeling files is beyond annoying and the cheap ones don't even get you good audio.
