Jailbreaking a kindle⋆˙⟡

Hello! So here I am with something I don't think a ton of people know you can do and I wanna share it cuz I think it's really cool :)

So everyone knows you can jailbreak consoles (I swear there's always someone in your ear telling you how easy it is to mod your 3ds) but did you know it's also not too hard to mod a kindle?

Now honestly the most you're gonna get out of a modded kindle is disconnecting it from being amazon reliant and letting you upload and read your own books in any ebook format. It CAN run simple games and apps but really it's mainly books. And when I say ANYTHING in ebook format I mean ANYTHING! (Seriously i have some fanfics saved to mine...)

I don't recommend buying a brand new kindle for this obviously fuck amazon- but if you have an old one lying around or you can get one used I can't reccomend this enough.

People here seem to be the crowd to enjoy dedicated devices rather than just a phone for everything so I'm sharing incase it inspires someone to mess with their own stuff.

I can't go too deeply into the modding process here, since it actually differs a lot depending on models, but i will link the site i used to mod mine and provide some tips :)

Firstly you'll need to figure out what model you have and what firmware it's on. To do this just open "all settings" on your device and select "device info" it'll tell you everything you need!

Now what you'll need is: your kindle, a charging cable that supports data transfer that can be connected to a PC and an amazon account (DW this is only needed for set up!) you'll need the internet too but if you're here that's already covered LMAO

An app I 100% reccomend is Koreader, It's basically what you'll use the most as it's the replacement for the amazon interface and what actually allows you to load all the custom books AND lets you install a custom lockscreen for when the kindle is switched off! (If you're on this site i assume you like customisation lmao) I'd reccomend using this because the default amazon one is always ads unless you paid extra for no ads...

There's a few options for lockscreens, you could set it to the last book you read, or a basic image but the most popular is fully custom pictures... Mine is toy bonnie LMAO

When i dug up my childhood kindle i found it was stuck in children's only mode, and there's a decent chance any old ones you find may be. This will restrict you from settings needed for the jailbreaking process. But don't worry it's easy to fix! (on 6th gen and newer at least...) just go to the section were you need to type in the parental control password and type "111222777" this will factory reset it!!

This was about an hour or so long process for me, mostly because kindles are SLOWWWW, and the process requires a lot of restarting your device and file transfers, but overall if you hae basic computer literacy it's pretty simple and I def reccomend it!! I feel like e readers are an underrated thing in the dedicated devices talk...
