i use a firefox plugin called "live editor for css", it lets you see what you're doing in real time, super useful :) im pretty sure there's a chrome version too

To be honest I just do it straight in the skin editor and occasionally copy it into notes as a backup, I keep another tab open of my page so i can refresh it and see the changes
