freak i didn't mean to delete my comment D: but yeah i totally agree with your friend. its nice to read smth when you're going through it and know that at least you don't have to save the world on top of your personal issues
I never really liked things like horror movies, arg's, analog horror stuff because i always found it so corny. Even the stuff that is highly rated, I never saw the appeal in engaing in it. Idk what angst really is so I can't comment on that :/
Watch Apocalypse Now then
consuming horror is like thrill-seeking in that it gives a dopamine rush to feel the sensation of danger before your brain catches up and reminds you that you're not in any true danger! this allows you to safely enjoy a little chemical boost
also for angst, I just enjoy a good narrative with emotionally complex characters who can suffer as much as they smile. it brings comfort to process heavy subjects in a safe, digestible manner.
but I take/make all things in moderation; I don't consider myself a hardcore horror fan or angst lover for the sake of angst, so my opinions may be different than others! :-]
Nothing like putting a character through hell and back to see how they change! I believe the best way to create character growth is to break their spirit one way or another. Stories have to have conflicts to be interesting, even if the conflict is menial. Likewise, a more intense conflict reaps more rewards.

As for horror, I like the idea, but am easily scared. It's definitely a thrill-seeking thing, though. You can get the adrenaline pumping, but knowing it's fake, it turns into excitement. I think enjoying horror relies on balancing the knowledge that it's all fake and indulging enough to still care.

I do like to laugh at some horror, though. It's a good coping mechanism for scary stuff. Like Mourning Dove Soap said, analogue horror can be really corny. Some of it is genuinely scary (like the Pumpkin Rabbit short films), but not all of it. Laughing at bad horror can be fun too!
With comedy you cannot do much, with horror you can experiment. growing up, self hatred, guilt. You can fight your trauma with horror, facing your fear straight on and those who don't like horrors, don't know they sometimes have a message (maybe not slashers, I hate slashers). I like arg's because they can tell greatest story then just a movie for example interloper, it's a story about a person who refuses to move on, digging their own grave just to see a loved one one last time and it took WHOLE COMMUNITY TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN (unfortunately it's over so there's no room for your own search and most of things that happened you can only see trough youtubers that made a videos about it, but I recommend watching, great story). People always mix arg with just a horror series or analog horror, but I hate analog horror, it's overused and I'm tired of spooky evil entities that kill evily. And about angst, who doesn't like angst!? It's cool and all, when Dante is making sss combo in a cutsceane or Raiden slashing his enemies into million pieces. But it can be a story device, showing main character refusal to "grow up". Yeah, idk what to say, so much on mind, so little time
Yes I agree horror can be a really good device for darker/heavier themes, but I would argue you can do a lot with comedy too. For example, TADC is a comedy but has some darker moments.
to be honest, i was into horror because of the things that it could do to make people scream, i'd say the same, but now i've grown immune to it i'd say the art of it is beautiful

I couldn;t say much for angst i disliked agnst
It's kinda like being on a roller-coaster. It's not for everyone, but those who enjoy it like the thrill
Yes this is what I theorized! As a roller coaster lover haha
I don't look or not very familiar with angst, but moreso horror. SPECIFICALLY psychological horror.
Ever since I started reading Homunculus, the genre has really fascinated me. But other than psychological horror, I do enjoy analog horror.
I had no business reading Homunculus at 16 but I enjoyed it. Glad to see people are still reading it today!
well i like angst in part cus it's cathartic, if that makes sense? There's something satisfying in a tragedy, and i think it was aristotle who said a whole thing abt tragedy being a play genre to act as catharsis for the viewer, to let out their negative emotions - sometimes angst is a nice way to process some of my heavier emotions, I also just find it really interesting, seeing what characters do up against challenges, when they're desperate, as that can really get to the core of a character. and as for horror I rlly don't like most movies as i hate jumpscares but i like psychological horrors, bcus again it rlly pushes a character to the brink and it's interesting to consider how they would handle it. plus sometimes it's fun to be a little creeped out - again, catharsis.
Interesting! That is true it is rlly good to push characters to their breaking point!
