I don’t see a group for shows but idk if it’s worth making one..

Regardless I just wanted to rant abt this one Netflix show The Gentleman. The first episode was really good but then the series got unwatchable. The main characters are SO BORING and the story has so many plot holes. It made me so mad watching the main characters - they have no character at all and have no chemistry either. The show is just very confusing and too fast paced, there’s so many characters I don’t even remember them when they reappear. What makes me the most mad is that the main character is a Duke (former military captain) so he’s ALREADY rich and prestigious and has no reason to do what he does in the show. He’s also so emotionless literally even after he KILLS SOMEONE. UGHHHSJDJJCKF SUCH A WASTE OF TIME

I'm interested in what specifically you don't like about it. What makes the characters boring?
They’re really nonchalant/emotionless - like TOO cool. It somewhat makes sense for the female lead ig cuz she’s supposed to be this criminal mastermind, but I also feel like it’s very forced feminism. Like it’s trying to characterize her as this badass but she doesn’t even do anything that shows this. The main leads are just too “perfect” and have no flaws, and it’s like 2 super models so it’s hard to relate to them.
@Ori I was just recently thinking about how fictional women are always depicted as girlbosses. It annoys me whenever a movie had one lead women and she's smart, athletic, socially intelligent, and so on. Yeah, it's better than making them exist just for sex appeal, but the men still get so much more variety. I want fictional women to just be treated like people; flawed and as common as men. Writers overcompensate, but the result is just as unrealistic.

Unfortunately, a lot of fandom-fixated people loooove a girlboss. I'm sure you know how they tear flawed fictional women to shreds.
omg on your "its very forced feminism... trying to characterize her as this badass" THIS IS SUUUCH A COMMON THING EVER SINCE LIKE 2000 AND IT PISSES ME OFFFFFF. like eveyrtime therrs a show or movie with a group of people and theres only one girl, shes always depicted as kinda unlikable with how "sassy" and "correct" she is oh my god. cant we let girls have flaws??? cant we let girls just be human beings with emotions who can laugh and make mistakes and learn from them???
I know 😭 it’s so infuriating
Literally! Writers refuse to write women as people. The fictional women are so unrealistic, they remain as just plot devices. Like:

"This is our token woman! She can do everything the male side characters can do. Not as much as the lead, but we can't get ahead of ourselves here. Her personality? She's a girlboss! What? You mean her flaws? Does being insatiably attracted to the protagonist count?"

It drives me mad. The lack of personality means they just stick around to provide quips and do things that other characters could probably do. Sure, she's a top secret agent, but how many times does she exercise her unique power and get a massive win? Sure, she's super strong, but will she be the one to save those people from a burning building?

I fear I'm getting into "angry at strawmem" territory, but I can't recall any women from these kinds of stories that actually stuck out as people. They were just the token ladies.
