Rodimus Prime: An Unwanted Fate
Really only about the Rodimus from the movie/ season three of the Gen one cartoon
One of my all time favorite Transformers characters is Rodimus Prime/ Hotrod. Because of the tragedy of his character. Perhaps not a tragedy in the literal sense, but in the sense that something he never wanted was forced on him. The 1986 movie establishes a few things about his character, most prominently that he's impulsive, reckless and somewhat laid back. The thing we first see of him is him fishing with his human companion Daniel, and not much later when he and Daniel go to the top of a hill to watch the autobot ship land Daniel points out that there's a hole in the side of the hull. After Hotrod gets a better look inside said hole and sees the Decepticons he immediately starts shooting without word to anyone else. Later on in the movie while the Autobots and Deceptions are fighting and Hotrod sees Megatron's trick, inadvertently causing the death of Optimus Prime. On his death bed Optimus passes on the Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus, but before he can take it Optimus drops it and Hotrod catches it. Of course it makes sense that he wouldn't have known just touching the Matrix would make him it's next bearer, it's the first time in at least four million years (but definitely many more) that the Matrix is being passed on. Skipping over the rest of the movie we get to season three of the generation one cartoon. In several episodes it's shown that Hotrod, now Rodimus Prime, does not like being a Prime. Shown most prominently in the episode 'The Return of Optimus Prime', in which he gives the Matrix of Leadership back to the zombie Prime before immediately taking off before anyone else can talk to him, but it's also in several other episodes as well. Why doesn't he enjoy being a Prime? Simply because all the other bots expect him to be like Optimus. He even expects it of himself despite knowing that he can't ever be like Optimus.
