I got into vocaloid by way of my older sister being into it!! i distinctly remember that my first song was World is Mine, and the second was the Gumi cover of CANDYCANDY (˶ˆᗜˆ˵). life changed forever..... then i got Project Mirai for the Nintendo 3DS and life changed again!!! Another time!!
then at some point probably within the same year i stubled upon JubyPhonic's World is mine cover and i went down a rabbit hole from there.. („• ֊ •„)
i first learned about it in 2012 or so? i watched a lot of videos like world is mine and rolling girl… i remember crying my eyes out to kokoro, that was my first fav song
Stumbled onto them while I was listening to openings and endings for FMA:B which I have been such a huge fan of since I was about 11-12. I don't remember my first song for sure, but it was either Wowaka's (RIP, legend) "World's End Dancehall" which hit different for my closeted gay self at the time *or* it was "Paired Wintry Wind" by sigotositeP (Meiko and Kaito were absolutely my parents). Another two songs that cemented my interest were both with Gumi, which I still adore - Tokyo Funka (I love the designs there) and Echo (the MMD with Danganronpa characters specifically)
You've reminded me how much of a happy memory it was to endlessly rewatch these videos at first before discovering more and more vocaloids and producers. But it took me quite a while and only the last couple of years to discover many more different songs.
You too don't rush, do it at your own pace, and most importantly - have fun and enjoy! I'm always very glad to see more people appreciating this specific form of music art, so thanks for this post!
I have so many favourites however I would suggest that whenever you really like a song a lot - go check out the producers' other work! They usually have their own signature sounds and styles. Some of the ones I like and recognize are:
- Wowaka (his creations are definitely classic, Unknown Mother Goose and its story are very dear to me),
- PinocchioP (Love Attribute and God-ish are such strong faves of mine, the lyrics in his songs are always so interesting and very relatable)
- Giga (the energetic hits are memorable too, I like Bring It On & Childish War a lot),
- Kanaria (mental crisis songs you can dance to basically, King & Queen are a great duo of songs but I like Envy Baby and Identity a lot too)
- Kairikibear (a bit more chaotic in a good way, Venom is one of my faves)
Separate shout out to Reol for being my favourite lyricist (& a prod.) for some of the songs and a really cool solo artist, she's so inspiring. Also Neru and Hachi are absolutely worth mentioning, I just got tired. There are so many more, these just come to mind first.
Have fun!!
i love to see more new fans and i highly recommend checking out the vocaloid database on vocadb.net
you can also check out vocaloid concerts online to get familiar with the producers. genuinely what i love about the voca community is how much the songs are labors of love by fans for fans and there are different styles of music production for everyone :)
