I bird watch and forage (kinda?) Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I tend to learn about species by finding stuff that I see really frequently in my area, then looking it up. Now that I've done it so frequently, I kinda have a good understanding of a lot of the common plants in my area, and can identify most of the common birds. I also prefer to look things up with either a book or by searching for things like "WHITE BIRD SMALL BACK HEAD MY AREA" and scrolling through images for half an hour, because I think struggling to find the info helps me remember it more? (maybe I'm just being pretentious, idk)
Range maps are also really useful for birding, just as a side note.
